who does what?

student:

  • Completes high school resume in Maia Learning  (up to end of junior year).  This will be used to help with applications and letters of recommendation.
  • Communicates with counselor about where s/he is applying.
  • Completes counselor brag sheet ​before the start of senior year, but at least 2-3 weeks before the earliest deadline that requires a letter (note that not all schools require a counselor letter)
  • Ask two teachers for letters of recommendation if needed - and ensures that they are properly requested in Maia 
  • Completes teacher brag sheets and sends to teacher.
  • Is responsible for knowing what each school requires and deadlines
  • Completes application forms, including essays.
  • Requests transcripts using Maia (if needed). See Maia Learning section under "College/Career Planning" for video tutorials.
  • For schools that require self-reported grades: Completes SRAR (Self Reported Academic Record) as required
  • Sends official SAT/ACT scores (or self-reports them if requested)
  • Applies for financial aid using the FAFSA, CSS Profile, and other apps as required by the schools
  • Monitors application status to be sure all parts of the application have been put together. Allow 2-3 weeks after submission of all materials for the college to send you a link to your application portal. In the portal, you can check the status of all your materials.

Parent:

  • Meet at least once with College Counseling in Junior year.
  • Helps with financial aid applications (FAFSA, CSS profile and school specific)
  • Supports student as they complete and submit applications.

counselor:

  • Meets with student in groups and individually
  • Meets with parents at least once in Junior year and as needed.
  • ​Sends School Report Form (if required)
  • Writes and submits counselor letter of recommendation (if required and requested)
  • Sends official transcript (if required and requested)

teacher:

  • Writes and submits letter of recommendation (if required and requested)
